Cleaning Your Glass Shower Doors Is Easier Than You Think

If we’re being totally transparent, we’ve clearly got the best methods.

As long as you’re bathing and using soap products, soap scum is just a part of your life. Deal with it. And soap scum loves glass. It appears as harmless little grayish spots, speckling your glass shower doors with undesirable, minerally freckles. Sure, it’s amusing to carve hearts and stars into the steamed-up glass while belting out Cyndi Lauper during your rinse and repeat, but you’re really only adding to the problem.

Here’s some fun math for you:

Minerals in hard water + Soap (paraffin, talc, fatty acids, etc.) + You (bacteria, dirt, dead skin, oils) = Soap Scum

Squeegees help (plus they’re fun!). You should be giving your glass shower doors a wipe down weekly, but they also could use a good deep cleaning once each month. But don’t worry. Cleaning your glass shower doors is super easy, and the results are quite rewarding. And we’ve got several techniques for cleaning your glass shower doors to maximize transparency.

You’ll need:

How to clean glass shower doors

  • Prerinse your glass shower doors with clean, hot water.
  • Let the hot water from the shower steam up the glass shower doors, loosening any bits of dirt or grime.
  • Open all windows and the bathroom door. Crank on all fans for proper ventilation before you get to scrubbing.

Method #1: Ready-made cleaning products

  • Spray down both the inside and outside of your glass shower doors with your favorite store-bought glass cleaner, carefully following the directions on the label. (Generally, ready-made glass cleaners don’t have to be wiped off after using.)
    • We love Mr. Clean Clean Freak Mist, an all-purpose cleaner that eliminates soap scum, grease and grime on everything from shower tiles and doors to handles and hardware.
  • Using your microfiber towel, rub the glass cleaner in purposeful side-to-side strokes.
    • If you work in small sections, the cleaner won’t drip, leaving streaks.
    • Applying the glass cleaner directly to your rag—versus spraying it onto the glass shower doors—will also help to avoid drippage.
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Bath is this amazing textured melamine sponge that cuts hard water stains and soap scum from glass (in addition to toothpaste spatters from countertops and grime from grout!).
    • To use, wet your shower doors, wet the sponge, then scrub or spot clean.
    • Leave a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Bath right near the shower to remind you to do your daily shower wipe down. A quick daily once-over with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Bath will make your monthly deep clean a breeze.
    • Pro tip: The best time to clean the shower is right when you’ve finished using it, while it’s still all warm and damp!

Method #2: The DIY solution

  • Good old white vinegar makes a fine glass cleaner.

    • If your shower doors are extra scaly, prewash them with several drops of a gentle dish soap, like Dawn, mixed with 2 cups of warm water prior to applying your vinegar wash (make sure to rinse thoroughly).
    • Fill a bucket with vinegar.
    • Apply to glass shower doors by soaking a sponge in a 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water solution and wiping onto the doors. The acidic vinegar prevents glass from streaking.
    • If you hate the smell of vinegar, add a few drops of essential oil to it to dilute the fragrance. (Pro tip: Some essential oils—such as tea tree oil—are antimicrobial, discouraging bacteria, mildew and mold from growing on surfaces, like your glass shower doors.)
    • Let the vinegar sit on the glass shower doors for about 30 minutes before wiping it off with hot water and a clean rag.
  • To spot treat your glass shower doors, make a DIY scrubbing paste using baking soda and water (1 cup of baking soda to 1 tablespoon of liquid). The texture of the paste should be thick like cake batter. If it turns out too watery, add more baking soda.

  • Use the paste to exfoliate your glass shower doors.

    • Apply your DIY solution with a soft, damp rag, careful not to scratch the glass.
    • Let the mixture sit for an hour (clean the showerhead or the grout in the meantime).
    • Wipe off the mixture with a clean, wet rag.
    • Rinse glass shower doors with hot water.
    • Use your squeegee to scrape the clean water away.
    • Polish dry with a microfiber rag to eliminate any streaks.

Streaking is a crime

  • Shaving cream also prevents glass shower doors from fogging up from steam. The glycerin in the shaving cream actually creates a protective coating on glass.
  • Wipe some black tea onto your glass shower doors with paper towels, then wipe them clean with a microfiber rag to prevent limescale buildup. The tannic acid in tea cuts the grime off glass surfaces.

Wrong side of the tracks

Spray or pour some of your favorite store-bought cleaning product or DIY solution into the metal tracks that your glass shower doors sit in, and let it sit overnight. Rinse in the morning with clean, hot water, wiping out any residual solution.

Extra credit

We recommend regularly spraying your shower with Microban 24 Bathroom Cleaner to keep the surface sanitized against bacteria for up to 24 hours, even after multiple touches.* Just spray and walk away, allowing the product to air dry. Its powerful cleaning formula penetrates soap scum and greasy messes, leaving your shower sparkling clean.

More miscellaneous unsolicited shower cleaning advice

  • Use a drain catcher to avoid drain clogs caused by hair and gunk buildup, which could lead to gross drain smells.
  • Keep a soap-dispensing dish brush in the shower for on-the-go cleaning. Yes, like the one you wash your dishes with. Fill it with some all-purpose cleaner, and give your shower walls and faucets a once-over while you’re letting your conditioner sit.
  • Use lemon to get rid of water spots on chrome faucets and on shower doors. Cut the fruit in half, and rub it directly onto the hardware. Plus you’re left with a delicious, citrus-scented shower.
  • Use a bleach pen on discolored grout between shower tiles.

Furthermore, we recommend adding cleaning your glass shower doors to your bathroom cleaning checklist. Remember: a light cleaning weekly, with a deep cleaning monthly. What’s that? You don’t have a bathroom cleaning checklist?

Don’t worry, we’ve got one for you.

*When used as directed, effective for 24 hours against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacter aerogenes bacteria. Microban 24 does not provide 24-hour residual virus protection.
